This sweet lil children s book gave me a nice quick biographical peek at an interesting fellow.
I bet kids will love it too A tall tale style account of The Great Antonio s life In some ways he reminded me of Andre the Giant who will forever and always be conflated with Fezzik in my mind , and so I loved him for that But Antonio also brings some unique greatness to the giant wrestler persona I think my favorite quirk might be his braids, and overall I can see him appealing to kids who appreciate larger than life characters.
My only real criticism is that I wanted to knowinformation There is a short note after the story about how The Great Antonio was a real man who lived in the author s hometown and there is a single photograph of a joyfully exuberant man inside the front cover But this just whetted my appetite.
Very short readmeant for early readers Can be read in less than 5 minutes.
Stunning and intricate illustrations and real photos Absolutely love it My kids and I all love this book Over the past month or so we ve read it dozens of times and maxed out our renewals at the library There s something very compelling about Antonio s story the combination of brute strength and a loving personality, and the fact that he ended up so lonely and sad I thought the idea about him being from outer space was a conceit of the author, but it turns out the real Antonio did claim to be from another planet Even though the story is based on fact, it has an unreal, almost spiritual quality and I think that is partly what has my kids asking for it again and again Also, there are so many little things to be fascinated by the long braids, the scenes with kids, the fight with the bearsometimes when I have to read stories too many times I get bored, but with this one I really didn t mind.
Cool non fiction comic easy reader so many modifiers about a Croatian Canadian strongman The illustrations are great, but it s not really a comic like the other Toon books It is actually a pretty typical illustrated easy reader, but about a super entertaining topic The Great Antonio seems like such a wild character, it s fun to imagine him living his life in the real world.
